The Korean Education Center in São Paulo (Director Shin Il-joo) signed an agreement with the University of São Paulo (Director Paulo Martins, Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences) on Friday, January 20, 2023, to establish and operate a Korean language teacher training program in 2023. In addition, ABPUC (the Brazilian Association of Korean University Professors) (President Lee Jungpyo) has also agreed to actively support the program through an agreement.
According to the Korean Education Center, this Korean language teacher training course reflects the growing trend of Korean language teaching in Brazil and is designed to train Korean language teachers optimized for the Brazilian market through the University of São Paulo's excellent Korean language faculty and curriculum, laying the foundations for the establishment of a Korean language teacher training system in Brazil.
The Korean Education Center in São Paulo is promoting the spread of the Korean language in various ways, such as operating direct Korean language courses and supporting Korean language adoption projects in local schools. Last year, around 1,300 students learned Korean in the Center's direct Korean language courses and around 2,650 in local schools that have adopted Korean language teaching.
A total of 15 students are being recruited for the Korean Language Teacher Training Program at the University of São Paulo's website. Eligibility is limited to graduates of the University of São Paulo's Korean literature course, or graduates of other universities, who have a level 4 or higher in the Korean language proficiency test (TOPIK) and who wish to work as Korean language teachers in the future.
The course will run from March to November 2023, totaling 180 hours of theory and practice related to Korean language teaching, including advanced Korean language, Korean teaching methods, and teaching practice, and students who complete the course will receive a certificate of completion recognized by the Center for Korean Education in São Paulo and the University of São Paulo (USP).
The Korean Education Center in São Paulo plans to position Korean teachers trained by this project as Korean teachers in local schools that teach Korean in the future.
In addition, the Brazilian Association of Korean University Professors (ABPUC) will cooperate with the University of São Paulo on various tasks necessary for the successful implementation of the curriculum.
"We hope to train more competent and optimized Korean language teachers for Brazil through excellent faculty and curriculum management," said director Shin Il-joo. "We hope that Korean language teaching in Brazil will be enriched by this opportunity."
"I sincerely hope that the Korean teacher training program, being introduced for the first time this year, will be well established at the University of São Paulo and open up many job opportunities for students majoring in Korean to work as Korean teachers in the future"
said Paulo Martins, director of USP's Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences.
"This program will further promote the Korean language in Brazil and expand cultural exchange between the two countries, and ABPUC (the Brazilian Association of Korean University Teachers) will actively support the program so that the supply of excellent Korean teachers in Brazil can continue to expand," said Professor Lee.
